Marillion

Progressive Rock 1980s 2 episodes

About

Out of Aylesbury, England in the late 1970s, Marillion emerged as one of the most serious torchbearers of progressive rock at a time when punk had declared the genre dead. Built around the theatrical, poetic front man Fish (Derek William Dick) and guitarist Steve Rothery, the band carved out a devoted following with a sound that owed plenty to Genesis and Peter Gabriel but felt entirely their own. Their debut album Script for a Jester's Tear (1983) announced a genuine creative force, and Misplaced Childhood (1985) became a prog landmark, a near-perfect concept album that actually charted mainstream in the UK.

When Fish departed in 1988, many wrote Marillion off, but the band surprised everyone by recruiting Steve Hogarth, a vocalist with a different but equally compelling style. Rather than imitating what came before, Hogarth-era Marillion evolved into something moodier and more atmospheric, with albums like Brave (1994) showcasing remarkable emotional depth. Perhaps most impressively, Marillion pioneered internet-based fan funding in the early 2000s, essentially inventing the crowdfunding model for musicians before Kickstarter existed. Fiercely independent and consistently ambitious, they remain a benchmark for what dedicated artistry and a loyal fanbase can sustain over decades.
