Def Leppard

Hard Rock 1980s 10 episodes

About

Sheffield, England gave the world plenty of steel, but none shinier than Def Leppard, who came roaring out of the city's working-class scene in 1977. Vocalist Joe Elliott, guitarists Steve Clark and Pete Willis (later replaced by Phil Collen), bassist Rick Savage, and drummer Rick Allen forged a sound that bridged the raw energy of British hard rock with radio-friendly hooks that could fill arenas on both sides of the Atlantic. Their melodic sensibility set them apart from the heavier acts of the era without ever sacrificing punch.

The band's commercial breakthrough came with Pyromania in 1983, a record that practically defined the decade's rock radio landscape. But Hysteria in 1987 was the real monument, a seven-times-platinum beast packed with hits like Pour Some Sugar on Me, Love Bites, and Animal. What makes Hysteria even more remarkable is that drummer Rick Allen recorded most of it with one arm, having lost his left in a 1984 car accident. That kind of grit earned the band genuine respect beyond the glam-metal crowd.

Def Leppard's cultural footprint is hard to overstate. They helped define the MTV era while proving that massive production values and emotionally resonant songwriting weren't mutually exclusive. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, they remain one of the best-selling rock acts of all time, still touring and proving their catalog holds up with zero apologies.
