Don Henley

Classic Rock 1980s 3 episodes

About

Best known as the heartbeat behind the Eagles, Don Henley carved out a solo career that proved he was every bit as essential on his own as he was behind the kit and at the mic with one of rock's biggest bands. Born in Gilmer, Texas, Henley co-founded the Eagles in Los Angeles in 1971 alongside Glenn Frey, and his drumming and distinctive vocal style became central to the band's signature sound. After the Eagles' acrimonious split in 1980, he launched a solo career that hit its stride almost immediately.

Henley's solo work leaned into polished, introspective rock with sharp lyrical edges — think literate songwriting meeting California cool. His 1984 album Building the Perfect Beast was a genuine blockbuster, spawning 'The Boys of Summer' and 'All She Wants to Do Is Dance.' He followed it up with 1989's The End of the Innocence, another critical and commercial triumph that cemented his status as one of rock's most thoughtful voices.

Culturally, Henley's influence runs deep. He's been a vocal environmental activist, particularly around protecting Walden Woods, and never shied away from using his platform to call out the music industry and political hypocrisy. Whether fronting the Eagles reunion or releasing solo work, Henley remains a defining figure of classic rock's more sophisticated, reflective side.
