About

When Nirvana imploded after Kurt Cobain's death in 1994, drummer Dave Grohl could have disappeared into rock history as a footnote. Instead, he recorded an entire album's worth of material essentially by himself and launched the Foo Fighters, one of the most enduring acts in modern rock. Based out of Seattle and later Los Angeles, the band solidified around a core lineup that eventually included guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer Taylor Hawkins, whose thunderous playing became a signature part of their sound before his tragic passing in 2022. Grohl remained the beating heart throughout, switching from skins to guitar and becoming one of rock's most charismatic frontmen in the process.

Musically, the Foos carved out a lane that blended post-grunge grit with melodic, arena-ready hooks and occasional hard rock muscle. Albums like The Colour and the Shape, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, and Wasting Light proved they could evolve without losing their identity. Wasting Light in particular, recorded to tape in Grohl's garage, felt like a love letter to analog rock and earned them a stack of Grammys. Beyond the records, their live reputation is legendary and their cultural footprint massive, keeping guitar-driven rock alive and loud during eras when it kept getting declared dead.
