Out of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Honeymoon Suite came together in the early 1980s and quickly became one of Canada's most beloved hard rock acts. Fronted by the charismatic Johnnie Dee, with guitarist Derry Grehan serving as the primary creative engine, the band built a sound that sat right at the intersection of arena rock muscle and melodic pop accessibility. Grehan's riff-driven compositions paired with Dee's powerful vocals gave them a distinct identity that translated well on both sides of the Canada-US border.
Their self-titled debut in 1984 announced them as a serious force, but it was The Big Prize in 1985 that really cemented their reputation, spawning hits like Feel It Again and New Girl Now. Racing After Midnight followed in 1988, continuing their commercial momentum. Their polished production and hook-laden songwriting fit the era perfectly, earning them consistent MuchMusic airplay and genuine mainstream crossover success.
Honeymoon Suite may not always get the international recognition they deserve, but Canadian rock fans know exactly how important they were to the domestic scene. They helped put Canadian hard rock on the map during the MTV generation and continue to tour and record, maintaining a loyal fanbase that still shows up in force. For fans of melodic hard rock with real songwriting chops, they remain absolutely worth your time.
