Jenny Lewis

About

Before going solo, Jenny Lewis made her name as the magnetic frontwoman of Rilo Kiley, the beloved indie rock outfit that defined a certain strain of early 2000s California melancholia. When she stepped out on her own in 2006 with Rabbit Fur Coat, a collaboration with the Watson Twins, Lewis signaled she had plenty more to say beyond the band format. That record leaned into country and gospel, showcasing a voice that could be honeyed and heartbroken in the same breath.

Her full solo debut, Acid Tongue, arrived in 2008 and pushed deeper into classic rock territory, drawing on everything from Tom Petty to Exile on Main St.-era Stones. Lewis has always written with a sharp, literary eye for character and detail, and her albums reward listeners who pay close attention to lyrics. The Voyager in 2014 and On the Line in 2019 both refined her sound further, the latter recorded with a stacked roster of collaborators including Ringo Starr and Ryan Adams.

Lewis occupies a respected corner of the indie and Americana rock world, beloved by critics and fellow musicians alike. She carries herself with the easy cool of a genuine lifer, someone who clearly grew up absorbing the best records and has been quietly making her own classics ever since.
