Jesus Jones

Alternative Rock 1990s 1 episode

About

Out of London's fertile late-80s alternative scene came Jesus Jones, a band that genuinely sounded like nothing else on the radio at the time. Frontman Mike Edwards assembled the group around 1988, with the core lineup including Barry D (keyboards/programming), Iain Baker (guitar), Jerry De Borg (guitar), and Gen (drums). What made them stand out was their fearless blending of rock guitars with dance beats, sampling, and electronic textures — essentially doing guitar-driven rave music before most people knew what that meant. They were techno-rock before the genre had a name.

Their 1991 album Doubt became their commercial peak and cultural touchstone, driven by the massive single Right Here Right Now, a euphoric anthem that captured the optimism surrounding the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. The track became inescapable on both sides of the Atlantic, hitting the top five in the US and UK simultaneously — a rare feat. Earlier album Liquidizer had already showcased their kinetic energy, but Doubt refined the formula into something genuinely cross-genre.

Jesus Jones never quite recaptured that commercial moment, but their influence on the alternative dance-rock crossover was real and lasting. Bands navigating that same rock-meets-electronica space owe them a nod. They quietly continued releasing music and occasional tours into the 2010s, maintaining a loyal fanbase who remember exactly where they were when Right Here Right Now blasted from every speaker imaginable.
