Loverboy

Hard Rock 1980s 1 episode

About

Calgary's Loverboy burst onto the scene in 1979 when vocalist Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean joined forces, quickly assembling one of Canada's most commercially potent rock acts. Rounding out the lineup with Doug Johnson on keyboards, Matt Frenette on drums, and Scott Smith on bass, the band had a chemistry that translated immediately to radio gold. Their sound landed squarely in that sweet spot between arena rock muscle and new wave polish, driven by Dean's crunchy riffs and Reno's distinctive wail riding over walls of synth.

Their self-titled 1980 debut was a certified smash, but 1981's Get Lucky absolutely exploded, delivering the anthemic Working for the Weekend, which became one of the defining rock songs of the decade. Keep It Up and Lovin' Every Minute of It kept them in heavy rotation through the mid-80s, and their ability to craft hooky, high-energy tracks made them MTV staples during rock's most glamorous era.

Loverboy never quite got the critical respect their sales figures deserved, but their cultural footprint is undeniable. Working for the Weekend has been licensed and referenced so extensively it's practically embedded in pop culture DNA. They're a band that serious rock fans revisit and consistently find more substance than their party-anthem reputation suggests, with tight playing and genuinely infectious songwriting holding up decades later.
