Marilyn Manson

Industrial Metal 1990s 1 episode

About

Rising out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the early 1990s, Marilyn Manson built one of rock's most notorious and enduring acts around the provocative vision of frontman Brian Warner, who adopted the band's namesake stage persona. Alongside longtime collaborator and guitarist Twiggy Ramirez, Manson crafted a sound and image designed to challenge, unsettle, and captivate in equal measure. Produced under the wing of Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, their 1994 debut Portrait of an American Family laid the groundwork, but it was 1996's Antichrist Superstar that announced them as a genuine cultural force. The follow-up Mechanical Animals pushed them toward glam-rock theatrics and landed them a number one album, while Holy Wood and The Golden Age of Grotesque continued their exploration of American mythology and excess. Manson's genius was always in the spectacle, merging shock rock in the tradition of Alice Cooper and KISS with industrial darkness and genuinely sharp songwriting. They became a lightning rod for moral panic in the late 90s, blamed for everything wrong with youth culture, which of course only made them more magnetic. Love them or loathe them, few artists defined the darker edge of mainstream rock in that era with such calculated, theatrical brilliance.
