Masters of Reality

Stoner Rock 1990s 1 episode

About

Out of Syracuse, New York, Masters of Reality emerged in the mid-1980s as one of the more intriguing acts to blur the line between classic rock worship and something genuinely forward-thinking. Mastermind Chris Goss assembled the band with a clear reverence for Black Sabbath's heaviness and the cosmic weirdness of early 70s rock, creating a sound that felt simultaneously ancient and fresh. Their rotating lineup has always centered on Goss, whose songwriting and production instincts have proven just as influential as his work fronting the band.

Their 1989 self-titled debut, produced by Rick Rubin and featuring future Cream drummer Ginger Baker on select tracks, remains a stone-cold classic of psychedelic hard rock. The record's thick, riff-driven grooves and hazy atmosphere pointed directly toward the coming stoner rock movement, earning Masters of Reality a reputation as quiet godfathers of the genre. Follow-ups like Sunrise on the Sufferbus continued to showcase Goss's knack for swampy, blues-infused songwriting with an experimental edge.

Though they never cracked mainstream success, Masters of Reality built a devoted cult following and earned enormous respect from fellow musicians. Goss went on to produce records for Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss, cementing his status as a key figure in desert rock's development. For fans who dig deep cuts and appreciate artists who prioritize feel over formula, Masters of Reality are an essential discovery.
