Nazareth

Hard Rock 1970s 2 episodes

About

Out of Dunfermline, Scotland came one of rock's most criminally underrated bands, Nazareth, who took shape in 1968 from the remnants of a group called The Shadettes. Anchored by the gravelly, instantly recognizable voice of Dan McCafferty, alongside guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet, the band built a reputation as a ferocious live act before the records even caught up. Their lineup remained remarkably stable through their peak years, which gave them a tightness that a lot of their contemporaries couldn't touch.

Musically, Nazareth sat right at the intersection of hard rock and blues-soaked heavy rock, sharing DNA with early Bad Company and Free while carving out their own rougher-edged identity. Their 1973 breakthrough Razamanaz announced them properly, but it was Hair of the Dog in 1975 that cemented their legacy. That album gave the world their thunderous cover of Love Hurts and the menacing title track, both of which became genuine rock radio staples. Expect No Mercy and No Mean City kept the momentum rolling through the late seventies.

Nazareth never quite cracked the absolute top tier of rock royalty, but their influence quietly filtered through generations of hard rock and heavy metal acts. They toured relentlessly for decades, keeping the faith with a devoted fanbase who appreciated pure, unpolished rock and roll done with real conviction.
