Phantom Blue

Hard Rock 1990s 1 episode

About

Los Angeles gave the world a lot of hair metal acts in the late 1980s, but Phantom Blue stood apart from the pack almost immediately. Founded in 1987, the all-female outfit built their reputation on serious technical chops rather than image alone. Guitarist Michelle Meldrum was the creative backbone of the band, delivering riff work and solos that could hold their own against any of the male-dominated acts ruling the Sunset Strip at the time. Bassist Kim Nielsen and vocalist Gigi Hangach rounded out a lineup that genuinely knew how to play.

The band released their self-titled debut in 1989 through Shrapnel Records, a label known for showcasing elite guitar talent, which told you plenty about where Phantom Blue stood skill-wise. Their follow-up, Built to Perform from 1993, pushed into heavier territory and demonstrated real growth as songwriters. Melodic hard rock with teeth, crunchy riffs, and impressive lead guitar work defined their sound throughout both records.

Phantom Blue never quite broke through to mainstream success, partly due to the grunge wave that swept away most of their contemporaries, but among fans who cared about musicianship they earned genuine respect. They remain a cult favorite and a touchstone in conversations about underrated acts of the era, with Michelle Meldrum's legacy continuing to be celebrated in the guitar community.
