Few artists managed to straddle the worlds of arena rock, pop, and progressive music quite like Phil Collins. Rising to prominence first as the drummer and eventual lead vocalist of Genesis following Peter Gabriel's departure in 1975, Collins proved he was far more than just a timekeeper — he was a genuine frontman with serious emotional range. His drumming style, rooted in jazz and R&B, gave Genesis records like Duke and Invisible Touch a punch that set them apart from their more cerebral early work.
