Psychedelic Furs

About

Out of London's post-punk ferment in 1977 came the Psychedelic Furs, a band that somehow made abrasive art rock sound genuinely seductive. Brothers Richard Butler on vocals and Tim Butler on bass anchored the lineup, with guitarist John Ashton providing the jagged, textured riffs that became the band's sonic signature. Richard's distinctive sandpaper baritone set them apart immediately, equal parts Lou Reed world-weariness and romantic yearning.

Their early records, particularly the self-titled debut and Talk Talk Talk from 1981, captured that perfect post-punk tension between noise and melody. They refined their sound on Mirror Moves and Forever Now, leaning into lusher, more polished production without losing their edge. Most people know them through Pretty in Pink, the track that inspired the John Hughes film, though hardcore fans will tell you the original 1981 version hits harder than the glossier 1986 re-recording.

The Furs never quite cracked the mainstream the way their contemporaries like The Cure or Depeche Mode did, but their influence runs deep. They helped define the blueprint for alternative rock's marriage of emotional intensity and sonic experimentation. After a lengthy hiatus they returned with Made of Rain in 2020, their first album in nearly thirty years, proving the chemistry between Richard and his bandmates remains very much intact.
