Simple Minds

New Wave 1980s 3 episodes

About

Out of Glasgow's post-punk scene in the late 1970s, Simple Minds carved a path that took them from angular new wave experimentation to full-blown arena rock anthems. The core of the band has always been Jim Kerr on vocals and Charlie Burchill on guitar, a partnership that dates back to their schooldays and remains the creative engine driving everything they do. Early records like Empires and Dance and Sons and Fascination showed a band heavily influenced by Krautrock and European art rock, all motorik rhythms and icy synthesizers.

By the mid-1980s, Simple Minds had evolved into something far bigger. Sparkle in the Rain and then New Gold Dream demonstrated a sweeping, cinematic ambition that few of their peers could match. Then came the career-defining moment when Don't You Forget About Me soundtracked The Breakfast Club in 1985, turning them into genuine global stars almost overnight. Once in a Lifetime followed and cemented their status as one of the defining acts of the decade.

What makes Simple Minds interesting to rock fans is the tension between their experimental roots and their pop instincts. They never quite fit neatly into one box, and their catalog rewards deeper digging beyond the hits. Still touring and recording, Kerr and Burchill continue flying the flag for melodic, atmospherically charged rock with real emotional weight.
