About

Seattle's Soundgarden emerged in 1984 as one of the earliest and most distinctive voices in what would become the grunge movement, built around the towering vocal range of Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil's down-tuned, psychedelic riffing, bassist Hiro Yamamoto, and eventually drummer Matt Cameron. Signed to Sub Pop before major labels came calling, they had roots in punk and heavy metal but always pushed further out than their peers, blending Black Sabbath heaviness with Led Zeppelin's bluesy swagger and a genuine experimental streak that set them apart from the pack.

Their ascent through albums like Louder Than Love and Badmotorfinger built serious credibility before Superunknown exploded in 1994, going quadruple platinum and delivering stone-cold classics like Black Hole Sun and Spoonman. Down on the Upside followed in 1996 before the band called it quits in 1997, arguably at the height of their powers. Cornell's voice remained one of rock's most jaw-dropping instruments throughout, capable of gut-punch aggression and haunting melody in the same breath.

Soundgarden's cultural footprint goes beyond just being a grunge touchstone. Their willingness to play with odd time signatures, unconventional tunings, and darker lyrical themes gave heavy rock a cerebral edge that influenced countless bands in the decades that followed. A reunion in 2010 proved they'd lost none of their force, and Cornell's tragic death in 2017 cemented their legacy as one of rock's genuinely irreplaceable bands.
