The Bangles

Power Pop 1980s 1 episode

About

Los Angeles gave birth to a lot of things in the early 1980s, but few acts captured the decade's spirit quite like The Bangles. The all-female quartet came together around 1981, anchored by sisters Vicki and Debbi Peterson alongside Susanna Hoffs and Michael Steele. Rooted in the Paisley Underground scene that was breathing new life into jangle pop and psychedelia, the band built their sound on tight vocal harmonies, Rickenbacker-driven guitars, and a genuine love of 1960s British Invasion rock. They weren't just riding a trend — these women could actually play, and they wrote most of their own material from the start.

Their commercial breakthrough came with Different Light in 1986, which spawned the infectious Manic Monday, penned by a then-relatively-unknown Prince. Everything in 1988 pushed them even further into the stratosphere, delivering the massive global hit Eternal Flame alongside Walk Like an Egyptian, which became one of the defining pop-rock anthems of the era. The Bangles occupy a fascinating space in rock history — credible enough for the critics who respected their guitar chops and influences, yet popular enough to dominate MTV and radio simultaneously. Their legacy has grown considerably over the years, recognized now as pioneers who proved that women could front a serious rock outfit without compromise.
