About

Out of Limerick, Ireland came one of the most distinctive voices of the 1990s alternative rock scene. The Cranberries coalesced around 1989 when vocalist Niall Quinn was replaced by the then-unknown Dolores O'Riordan, whose unearthly vocal style — built around that signature lilting vibrato and raw emotional intensity — instantly set the band apart. Rounded out by brothers Noel and Mike Hogan on guitar and bass, plus drummer Fergal Lawler, the lineup that would conquer alternative radio was locked in.

Their 1993 debut Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? introduced the world to their dreamy blend of jangly post-punk guitars and Celtic-tinged melodies, but it was No Need to Argue in 1994 that cemented their status. That record housed Zombie, a ferocious, distortion-drenched protest song about the IRA's violence in Northern Ireland that became one of the defining tracks of the decade. It showed a band capable of real political weight alongside their more ethereal, introspective work.

The Cranberries sold over 40 million records worldwide and remain a touchstone for anyone who came of age with alternative rock in the 90s. Dolores O'Riordan's tragic passing in 2018 cut short any hopes of a full comeback, but her voice and the band's catalog endure as something genuinely irreplaceable in rock history.
