Out of Carteret, New Jersey came one of the most underrated power pop outfits of the 1980s and beyond. The Smithereens coalesced in 1980 around the core lineup of Pat DiNizio on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jim Babjak on lead guitar, Mike Mesaros on bass, and Dennis Diken on drums. These guys grew up soaking in British Invasion records and American garage rock, and it showed in every note they played. Their sound was deceptively simple but incredibly potent, built on big, crunchy guitar riffs, melodic hooks that stuck in your head for days, and DiNizio's instantly recognizable voice carrying lyrics that often explored longing, obsession, and heartbreak with real emotional weight. Their 1986 debut Especially for You announced them as a serious force, but it was 1988's Green Thoughts and 1989's 11 that really cemented their reputation among rock devotees. They never quite broke through to arena-level fame, which remains a genuine injustice given the quality of their catalog. The Smithereens influenced a generation of alternative and indie rock acts who understood that a great song still lives or dies on its melody and its guts. DiNizio passed away in 2017, a genuine loss for rock and roll, but the band has continued performing his legacy with deep respect and evident love for the music.
