Out of post-punk London in the late 1970s came one of the most defiantly original acts the alternative scene ever produced. The The is essentially the creative vehicle of Matt Johnson, who has remained the band's sole constant member while collaborating with a rotating cast of musicians over the decades. Johnson's vision was always singular and uncompromising, blending post-punk angst with synth-driven textures, blues influences, and brutally honest lyricism that tackled politics, religion, and existential despair with unflinching clarity.

The band's commercial and critical peak came through a string of essential 1980s albums. Soul Mining from 1983 is a masterwork of atmospheric pop and dark introspection, while Infected in 1986 pushed harder into political territory with stunning production from Johnson himself. Mind Bomb in 1989 brought in guitarist Johnny Marr, fresh from The Smiths, adding a rawer rock edge that gave the record enormous weight. Dusk in 1992 rounded out this incredible run with a blues-soaked meditation on loneliness and desire.

Though The The never achieved mainstream superstardom, their influence on alternative and indie rock runs deep. Johnson's refusal to compromise artistically earned massive respect among fans who valued substance over style, and the catalog holds up remarkably well today. A lengthy hiatus ended with 2018's comeback tour, reminding everyone exactly why this band matters.
