About

Out of the New York bar circuit in the early 1970s, Twisted Sister spent nearly a decade grinding through clubs before the world finally caught up with them. Led by the impossibly theatrical Dee Snider on vocals and anchored by guitarist Jay Jay French, who founded the band back in 1972, they built a ferociously loyal following through relentless live performances before landing a major label deal. Eddie Ojeda, Mark Mendoza, and A.J. Pero rounded out the classic lineup that would eventually storm the mainstream.

Musically, Twisted Sister sat squarely in the glam metal and hard rock lane, blending massive riffs with anthemic, fist-in-the-air choruses built for arenas. Their 1984 breakthrough Stay Hungry delivered the one-two punch of We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock, both of which became era-defining MTV staples. The album went double platinum and turned the band into household names almost overnight after years of paying serious dues.

Culturally, Twisted Sister punched well above their weight. Dee Snider famously testified before the U.S. Senate in 1985 against the PMRC's push for music censorship, handling himself with sharp intelligence that surprised critics expecting a buffoon in makeup. We're Not Gonna Take It became a genuine cultural shorthand for rebellion and defiance that still echoes in movies, sports arenas, and political rallies decades later.
