Out of Washington D.C. in the early 1990s, Vertical Horizon came together when guitarist and vocalist Matt Scannell linked up with guitarist Keith Kane, initially performing as an acoustic duo on the college circuit. The two built a dedicated grassroots following through relentless touring and a handful of independent releases before the band expanded into a full electric rock outfit and caught the attention of major labels. Their hustle paid off when RCA signed them and helped push their 1999 major-label debut Everything You Want into the mainstream spotlight. That album became a genuine phenomenon, spinning off the massive hit single of the same name which sat at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for multiple weeks and became inescapable on radio that summer. The song's melodic hook and emotionally direct lyrics about one-sided relationships connected with a wide audience without feeling cheap or overly polished. Musically, Vertical Horizon sat comfortably in the post-grunge and alternative rock lane, blending clean guitar work with earnest, confessional songwriting that drew comparisons to bands like Matchbox Twenty and Third Eye Blind. While they never quite replicated that commercial peak, subsequent albums like Go showed Scannell continuing to craft radio-friendly rock with genuine craft and sincerity, earning them a loyal fan base that appreciated substance over flash.
