Out of Oakland, California came Y&T, one of the most criminally underrated hard rock acts of the 1980s. Originally called Yesterday and Today, the band coalesced around guitarist and vocalist Dave Meniketti, whose searing tone and soulful delivery set them apart from the pack. Alongside founding members Phil Kennemore on bass and Leonard Haze on drums, Meniketti built a sound that blended melodic hard rock with genuine bluesy grit, something rarer than it should have been during the era of big hair and flashy excess.
Their best work still holds up beautifully. Black Tiger from 1982 and Mean Streak from 1983 remain essential listens, packed with muscular riffs and Meniketti's soaring vocals. Meanstreak's title track and the emotional ballad Surrender showcased a band that could write hooks without sacrificing heaviness. Despite landing on major labels and touring relentlessly alongside acts like AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne, Y&T never quite broke through to arena-headliner status, which remains one of rock's genuine injustices.
Dave Meniketti has kept the band alive through various lineup changes across the decades, and their cult following is deeply loyal for good reason. Y&T represents the honest, hardworking side of classic hard rock, built on real chops and real songs rather than image alone.
