About

New York City gave the world a lot of things in the early 1970s, but few exports hit harder than Kiss, who came together in 1973 when Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons linked up with Ace Frehley and Peter Criss to create one of rock's most theatrical and bombastic acts. From the jump, these guys understood that rock and roll was as much spectacle as sound, and the iconic face paint each member wore became instantly legendary — the Starchild, the Demon, the Spaceman, and the Catman etched themselves into rock history before most bands had even figured out their setlists.

Musically, Kiss planted their flag firmly in hard rock and glam metal territory, cranking out anthems built for arenas and stadiums. Albums like Alive!, Destroyer, and Rock and Roll Over cemented their status in the mid-70s, with Destroyer's 'Detroit Rock City' and 'Beth' proving they could swing between full-throttle rockers and genuine ballads without missing a beat. Their 1978 solo album experiment — all four members releasing individual records simultaneously — remains one of rock's most audacious stunts.

Few bands have matched Kiss when it comes to merchandising and brand-building, and while critics often dismissed them, their influence on everything from hair metal to shock rock is undeniable. Bands from Motley Crue to Garth Brooks have cited them as touchstones, and their KISS Army fanbase remains one of rock's most devoted. They are, without argument, one of the greatest rock and roll brands ever assembled.
