Mötley Crüe

About

Los Angeles gave the world a lot of things in the early 1980s, but few acts hit as hard or as recklessly as Mötley Crüe. Bassist Nikki Sixx founded the band in 1981, pulling together vocalist Vince Neil, guitarist Mick Mars, and drummer Tommy Lee to create one of the most notorious lineups in rock history. From the jump, these guys were built for excess — the look, the attitude, and the volume were all cranked to eleven before they'd even cut their first record.

Musically, Mötley Crüe planted their flag firmly in the glam metal camp, mixing crunching riffs with massive hooks and arena-ready choruses. Their debut Too Fast for Love turned heads, but it was Shout at the Devil and the monster commercial breakthrough Dr. Feelgood that cemented their legacy. That 1989 record hit number one and proved they could survive the chaos of addiction, near-fatal accidents, and lineup drama to still deliver the goods.

Their cultural impact stretches well beyond the music. The tell-all memoir The Dirt — later adapted into a Netflix film — became essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the hedonistic peak of 1980s rock culture. Love them or roll your eyes at them, Mötley Crüe defined an era and influenced countless bands who followed in their stiletto-heeled footsteps.
