Iron Maiden

Heavy Metal 1980s 4 episodes

About

Out of East London in 1975, Iron Maiden rose from the gritty pub rock scene to become one of heavy metal's most enduring forces. Bassist and founder Steve Harris assembled a rotating cast of musicians before locking in the classic lineup that would define the band's golden era, most crucially the arrival of vocalist Bruce Dickinson in 1981 and guitarist Adrian Smith alongside stalwarts Dave Murray and Clive Burr on drums. Their twin-guitar attack, galloping bass lines, and Dickinson's operatic wail set them apart from everything else happening at the time.

The albums they dropped in the early eighties were simply untouchable. The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave hit like a freight train and helped put the New Wave of British Heavy Metal on the global map. Mascot Eddie became one of rock's most recognizable icons, and the band's elaborate live productions set a new standard for arena spectacle. Songs like Aces High, Run to the Hills, and Hallowed Be Thy Name remain essential listening for any serious metal fan.

Decades on, Maiden's influence is impossible to overstate. They shaped virtually every heavy band that came after them, from thrash to power metal to modern prog acts. With a catalog spanning nearly 50 years and a fanbase that spans generations, they've proven that great songwriting and relentless touring beats any trend.
