Peter Gabriel

Progressive Rock 1980s 6 episodes

About

Few artists have managed to reinvent themselves as successfully as Peter Gabriel, the former Genesis frontman who stepped out on his own in 1975 after parting ways with one of prog rock's most celebrated acts. Gabriel's departure was amicable but bold, and what followed was a solo career that arguably eclipsed his work with the band. His early self-titled albums, cheekily nicknamed by fans as 'Car,' 'Scratch,' 'Melt,' and 'Security,' showcased a restless musical mind pushing against the boundaries of conventional rock.

Gabriel's style is genuinely hard to pin down, blending art rock, world music, electronic experimentation, and raw emotional intensity into something entirely his own. The landmark 1986 release So brought him mainstream recognition on a massive scale, driven by the unstoppable 'Sledgehammer' and the heartbreaking 'In Your Eyes.' His work on the WOMAD festival and the Real World Records label showed a deep commitment to global musical traditions long before it was fashionable.

Culturally, Gabriel's influence runs deep. His pioneering use of music video as genuine art, his innovative live stagecraft, and his willingness to tackle political themes like apartheid on 'Biko' set a standard that plenty of artists have chased but few have matched. He remains one of rock's most distinctive and respected voices.
